Brendan Graduates Middle School

It was Brendan's turn to graduate from middle school this year. Ken and I didn't make it to the Church but from what I heard, it was pretty hot. We are in the middle of a heat wave, so I can only imagine. By the time Ken and I got there, the kids were already in the pool making waves. We were excited the pool was open. They must have done it just a few days ago. (Everyone had a late start with their pools this year. Spring was really cold, and then the weather suddenly changed into Summer. I guess we missed spring this year.) Anyway, we got a little boat thing for Jake and wanted to see what he thought about being in a pool. He loves the tub, but this was gonig to be something much different for him.

Most everyone was there, but as with all our family events, someone always seems to be missing. As the kids get older, I guess it's harder to wrangle them into coming to family events. We unpacked Jake and settled into the screen room. It was cooler than being outside, but it was still pretty hot. Every once in a while we headed inside to cool down a bit. Nana (Karen's grandmother) was asking about Jacob, so I used that as my first excuse to slip in out of the heat. Jake loved playing with Nana's walker. She has a basket on the front, so he just kept putting his golf ball in the basket, out of the basket, in the basket out of... Well you get the idea. Nana loved him. I think she probably loves all kids, though.

There were balloons everywhere. You know how Karen loves to decorate for an event. Well, who doesn't, right? I think Jake thought he had died and gone to heaven. In his mind a balloon is a ball, and we all know how much he loves balls. It was bah, bah, bah everywhere. Brian and my father got a couple balloons down for him to play with. They were filled with helium, though, so they ended up in the ceiling of the screen room. Once they were there, it was bah, bah, bah, point up, bah, bah, point.

Brendan and the kids pretty much stayed in the pool. Someone brought a slip and slide. Instead of sliding down, Brenden got a little surf board thing. It looked a lot more fun that way. Brendan took Jonathan and shot him down the slide on his belly. He really seemed to like it. Although, he seemed to like being in the pool while they were making all those big waves, too. I'm guessing he doesn't have a lot of fear. When we put Jake in the pool we asked them for calmer waters. He hated it at first. I think he was a little nervous about his feet floating in the water. Ken held him up for a little while and slowly let him sink into the little seat. He loved it. We knew he would. The kid's got a thing for water. It's all we can do to keep him out of the animals' water dishes. Even if he spills some juice on his high chair tray, he has to splash in it.
