Father's Day
(6/18/05)

We had our annual Father's Day celebration on Saturday with almost all the family at our place. This was Ken's second "First Father's Day". We received the referral for Jake in time for Father's Day last year, so technically that was his first. This was Ken's "real" first Father's Day since Jake was here.

Jake made a footprint in daycare to go along with my Mother's Day handprint, so now we have a matching set. I got him the usual array of "Dad" tees and a "Dad" hat. I figured he needed to get all that traditional stuff at least once, right? He said he would actually wear the one with Jake's handprints to work. That's cool. He changed into it at the party.

We played a lot of horseshoes this year. We did sandwiches instead of the usual BBQ, so I think that freed us up a little more. Rob and Rosie are the team champs, but somehow Ken and I managed to beat them. We had to do a rematch after they beat the next challengers, but we lost. So they are back onto a winning streak again. There probably should have been a "rubber match", but I am really not a horseshoe player, so I quit.

The kids mostly spent the day playing basketball and wiffle ball. The littler ones pulled out the bubble machine and had fun with that. Jake did a lot of squealing. When he's having a really good time, he kind of scream-sqeals. It was funny because I didn't realize that most people haven't heard him do this, so when he did it, there was a lot of head turning. They all thought he was upset about something, but no, it's actually his happy sound. The day ended with some bottle rockets until Mean Amy made them stop. Jake had already been put down to sleep, and the last thing I wanted was for him to get woken up. The bangs were making Dakota bark, plus Jacob's window faces the backyard. I knew he was pretty whipped, but I really didn't want to take a chance.

Nobody stayed over this year. I guess they don't like having Jake pounce on them so early in the morning. I'm sure Jake enjoys it, but I guess I can see their perspective. Plus, it's pretty hard to put Madison down when we're all up. She really hates to miss any fun!
