Our
little peanut finally arrived!
It felt like it took forever, but it's great to have him here.
We had been away at the beach for the weekend and extended it for an additional day. So we got back on Monday instead of Sunday. We had a feeling that we were going to get the call within the week or so because it had been a really long wait so far. The average wait is supposed to be 3 - 6 months, and we were at the other end of that. We had that whole eye tracking thing going on, so I think that back and forth with the doctors kind of held him up a little bit. We had finally given them the "go ahead", so we really felt it was going to be soon. So, anyway back to the story.
We get home and there are like messages crazy all over the place - my work, Ken's work, and a couple at home. There are emails at Ken's work, my work, our home address. We knew there could only be one reason our social worker was crazy trying to get a hold of us, so we returned her call. Yup, he was ready to go. In fact, he was REALLY ready to go. He was going to be here in 2 more days. Well, good thing we didn't have much to do to get ready because there wasn't going to be much time to do anything. Our social worker Jocelyn was funny. When she finally got a hold of someone at my work, they told her I was on vacation. I was only on a vacation day for Monday, but she panicked that we were on vacation for the week and didn't tell her. She had even called our back up person (my father), but couldn't get a hold of him either. Yah, they were with us at the beach. We thought it was pretty funny, but she didn't think so.
So we headed to Sam's Club to get diapers and formula and to the grocery store for baby food. That was about all we needed to do. Way better planning for number 2. Basically all we needed to do was go up in the attic and pull down Jacob's stuff and clean it. We never bothered to take the crib down, so that was all ready set to go.
Finally
Wednesday comes. We have a whole crew going up to Boston with us. Ken's sister
Liz and Madison came. My father and Esta drove Brian, Karen, Brendan, and my
mother. It was great having so many people there. Last time we wanted to keep
it to ourselves and really only wanted someone else there in order to take pictures
(no offense Liz). This time we wanted to share it with everyone because it really
is cool. We left much later this time since we knew there really isn't any reason
to get there so early. However, we hit dead stop traffic about a couple miles
onto the Mass Pike. It was like no moving for about 45 minutes. I have to say
it made me a little bit nervous because we had allowed for a little extra time,
but not like an hour or anything. So as when we finally got passed the accident
I called out WHFC greeter on her cell. She was already at the airport and had
been there since 5PM. We didn't need to meet her until like 7-7:15, so she must
go to the "Liz School of Being On Time". I had been tracking the flight
at work, so I already knew the flight was 15 minutes behind schedule, so I wasn't
expecting the flight until 8:15. I couldn't understand whey we had to meet her
so early, but whatever. Anyway, I let her know about where we were and that
we might be getting there closer to 7:30. I also called Esta to
find
out where they were. It would have been a bummer if they drove all the way to
Boston only to find out they missed the "hand off". The were still
in the traffic, but we assured them it wouldn't be too much longer.
We
get to the airport just after 7:15 and catch up with our greeter. To stick with
the routine from last time, we hit Burger King again. I think the greeter thought
we were a little crazy, but we had an hour to kill and there was no reason to
pace at the gate, right? So after we ate, we saw my family had also made it
to the gate. It's a neat thing to do this. Last time there wasn't any one else
at the gate but us, the greeters, and the other couple getting their baby. This
time there were other people. It was cool because everyone figures out that
you are waiting for a baby. It definitely builds up the excitement. So, then
you hear the plane lands (I'm getting chills writing this because I'm reliving
that feeling!). This time we were
allowed
to go down further to the gate. So the whole crowd of us mosh down. And there
he is! He's just a tiny little guy, and he's NOT crying - Yae!
I get the hand-off and it's just like I expected. He just melts into my arms. There are cameras flashing but it all fades into the background as I hold my little Mitchell. Way too cool. Finally I snap out of it and I hear the people coming of the plane. They too know there is someone getting a baby. They've been flying since San Francisco knowing there was someone in Boston waiting for him. Everyone was really cool letting me hold him for as long as I wanted, but I finally hand him off to one of the many the hands reaching for him. The escort stayed for some pictures. He was really happy for us and thought we were special for doing this. I gotta say what he does is pretty cool too. I can't imagine flying all the way from Korea with a baby and then turning around in the morning to fly back. What a long couple days! So, like Jacob, he screamed when we in the car seat. He cried for a lot of the way home, but finally fell asleep. He didn't come home all ready to play. He was actually tired and slept - sort of - thru the night. He is settling in slowly and Jacob just adores him. So our journey continues...
