Ken Turns 40!
(2/18/06)

Ken hit the big 4-0 so I decided to throw a little party. He didn't want any big thing, so I just kept it to his family. I spent a chunk of time practicing with Jacob for the big day. He had it down perfectly so that he could say Happy Birthday and also answer how old Daddy is -- Oooold. (By the way I also taught him to respond "young" when asked how old Mommy is!) We timed the party for later in the day so that we could make sure Jacob was all rested for the festivities. (Yes, our world revolved around him, and we're cool with that.)

I tried to do a few of Ken's favorites, but we really wanted to try to keep it healthy for Ken Sr. The last thing we wanted was a mishap at the party! I made a big birthday cake with a bowling theme. I hadn't really done anything to celebrate the big deal, so I figured this was a good time to do something. I was pretty cool. Mr. Ryan has been taking a cooking class with his Aunt Lisa, so he brought along some goodies with him. He had a Chocolate Turtle cake that put my bowling cake to shame. It was very impressive. He even spelled out Ken in chocolate pieces. He also brought along some yummy cheesy bites for an appetizer. As always, the kids spent the day downstairs playing. I'm sure they can't wait for Spring so they can play horseshoes, but they made due with playing pool. I don't know the results because it was just too cold down there for me. Jake and the little ones stayed up with us in his playroom. Fortunately we were able to NOT have to watch Nemo, that just meant that we watched Lion King instead.

When it was time to eat there was too much food, as usual. I thought I had it down, but there were still a lot of leftovers. Jake was really psyched about the cake. He really got down to business. Of course, Jordan and Perry didn't help matters much. I think they were kind of encouraging him to get more messy. He kept putting his frosting filled hands in his hair and saying "Oh no". What a mess.

Ken's parents and Steven stayed over, but it wasn't the usual marathon card night. It was the first night Ken Sr. had been up late, so he was out of practice. It was good for Steven, because that meant that we didn't have to lie to Liz for how late he stayed up. It was a good night, and I'm sure Ken was happy to have done some celebrating for the event.

Probably watching Nemo or Shark Tales It's all about the food.
Dueling Cakes Uh Liz, you needed to move the OTHER way Who knew cake could be so much fun?
