Jake and Madison Head to the Fair!
(8/13/05)

It was a scorcher week, but we planned a day at a fair in the next town over. We invited Liz and the kids up so Madison could also go to her first fair. As it turned out, it was the first fair for Steven and Jordan, too. Jordan was pretty surprised when she was reading about the fair and saw there were going to be cows and sheep. Up where we live, we have "country fairs", where vegetables, livestock, and crafts are judged. There are commercial booths selling things, but there are also booths sponsored by the local Lion's Club, Rotary, etc selling burgers, dogs, ice cream, etc. So, we packed everyone up in the sweltering heat and headed off.

Our first stop was for lunch. It was great because the booth selling hot dogs saw we had Jake, so they cut up the dog for him and included some mac/cheese instead of the roll. It was really nice of them. Jake wasn't too thrilled at first, but then he opened up. He especially like dunking his hot dog pieces in the ketchup. Madison didn't want any part of the wagon, so she stuck to her carriage and ate a private lunch. I love fairs for the animals, but also for the food. I already knew what my line-up was going to be. Since Madison had left the other half of the wagon free, I plunked my butt down next to Jacob. I started off with the hot dog, and while Jake was finishing up his mac/cheese, I had my second course of a home-made doughnut. I looked up from my frenzy and saw that Jordan was passing off her pizza to Liz for a doughnut herself. Ken was good and just had a dog. Once lunch was over, we headed to the animals. On the way we passed my favorite - the fried dough stand. Ken picked one up while we continued to the animals.

Jake loves his farm animal toys, but he has only ever seen a real cow once. I wheeled him over to the sheep. He was pretty happy about the "baa baa" and things were going well. All of a sudden the sheep tucked his head thru the fence. Let's just say he was less than pleased. He moved as far over in the wagon as he could. Madison loved seeing all the rabbits and ducks. We tried to get everyone to pose in front of all the cows, but Jake was too freaked out by them. It was really hot, so we decided to head back home to the duck pool.

Ken's parents knew we were hanging out, so they headed up later in the day. It was a surprise because we don't have central air and like I said, it was a hot one. We put the kids in their swimmie diapers and plunked them in the pool. Their red little faces returned back to normal no long after. There was a decent breeze by then, so the humidity wasn't as opressive. Plus we kept putting our feet in Jake's pool to refresh us. Dot managed to hang out for a couple hours, but she had to head back to her AC at home. Liz and the kids braved it and stayed over. It was a lot of fun. We're all looking forward to the Hebron Fair in September.
